This site is designed to provide information about rules and obtaining permits for moving extra-legal vehicles and loads through Colorado. Extra Legal Vehicles are those vehicles exceeding size and weight restrictions on Colorado Highways and Interstates.

Please Note:

Chain Law in effect - September 1, 2010 - May 31, 2011.

Commercial vehicles operating on I-70 in either direction between mileposts 133 (Dotsero) and 259 (Morrison) must carry sufficient chains at all times to be in compliance with the Colorado chain law.

 

OSOW Permit Surcharge, effective July 1, 2009

Single Trip and Special Transport Permits that are issued on July 1, 2009 or later will be assessed a surcharge equal to the amount of the permit fee pursuant to the passage of Senate Bill 09-108.
This means an oversize only Single Trip permit will increase from $15 to $30.  Specials will increase from $125 to $250.  Single Trip permits issued for size and weight or weight only will increase from $15 + $5/axle to $30 + $10/axle.

Important Reminder:

  • The Permit Office has a 2-hour turn around time for the issuance of Single Trip permits.  We will not guarantee that applications received after 3:00 p.m. (MT) will be processed on the same business day.  Applications are processed in the order in which they are received.
  • The turn around time for the issuance of Chapter 6 Specials (Superloads) is 3-5 business days.

Our busiest days of the week are typically Mondays and Fridays.  We recommend that applications be submitted early in the day to avoid delays.
