Maps and Restrictions for Extra-Legal Vehicles or Loads Updated April 18, 2014**

Extra-Legal Vehicles or Loads

OS/OW Loads are Prohibited from Travel when hazardous conditions exist. Hazardous Conditions include SNOW, ICE, MUD, ROCKS, WIND and REDUCED VISIBILITY. No Oversize Movement is EVER allowed where the Chain Law is in Effect. Overweight only are allowed to chain up and proceed as conditions allow. See Rule 2 CCR 601-4, 4-1, D.

Chain law will begin on September 1, 2013 through May 31, 2014

Width restriction: No permits over 11 feet; through March 31, 2014.  This restiction is 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Front pilot escort required on route for vehicles/loads greater than 8 feet 6 inches.

Vehicles/loads with a width greater than 8 feet 6 inches require a Chapter 6 Special from MP 100 to MP 105.

OS/OW loads that exceed 13 feet in width will need to use the following detour:

Southbound - I-225, Hwy 83, Hwy 21, Hwy 24

Check the "Pilot Escort Map' for escort requirements.

MP 149 to Exit 163 - Monument Hill Rd to County Line Rd  -southbound-

Reduced Speed Limit: Speed limits in this construction zone will vary depending on the time of day and the number of "through" traffic lanes.  The number of traffic lanes can be reduced to one lane, each direction, between 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday.  Additional, the speed limit may be reduced to 45 MPH where traffic is reduced to one lane for construction.

Width restriction: No permitted loads over 8 feet 6 inches

Width restriction: No permits over 12 feet beginning immediately until further notice.  This restriction is from 11:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., seven days a week.

Height restriction: No vehicles/loads over 14 feet 6 inches in height from 10:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., seven days a week.

Ramps will be single lane ramps 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Length restriction: Loads that exceed 85 feet length must have a certified pilot car in the rear.

Width restriction: Loads that exceed 13 feet wide must have a certified pilot car in the rear.

Width restriction: No overwidth permits through at least September 30, 2014.

MP 213.6 - Eisenhower Tunnel

Width restriction: Permitted loads over 11 feet must pull over to get permission to pass through the tunnel.

Height restriction: Loads 13 feet 11 inches tall or less may now travel through the Eisenhower Tunnel.

West Idaho Springs Exit Ramp (Exit 239 Eastbound Only)

Complete closure of this ramp until further notice.

Width restriction: No permits over 15 feet beginning immediately through September, 2015.  This restriction is 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The work zone speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH.

Height restriction: No permits over 15 feet 9 inches.

Loads over 15 feet 9 inches tall may go around Structure G-22-BA at the junction of I-70 and Hwy 24 by using the on/off ramp.

Hwy 196 Between Hwy 287 and Hwy 385

Abandonment by the Colorado DOT to Prowers County on May 7, 2010. OSOW loads wanting to use this state hwy turned to a county road must contact Prowers County for permit/permission to use it.

Northbound and Southbound Lanes of I-225 at Alameda

Height restriction: No permits over 15 feet and 6 inches. Loads that are higher must contact the City of Aurora Police Department at least one hour before arrival at this intersection to arrange for a police escort to stop traffic so the load may exit and re-enter I-225 without traffic congestion or accidents. Aurora PD's phone number is 303-627-3100.
