I-25 at State Highway 392 - Interchange Improvement and Resurfacing Projects

Existing I-25 at State Highway 392Interchange Project Overview

The Colorado Department of Transportation and its partners, the City of Fort Collins and the Town of Windsor, has begun an interchange improvement project at I-25 and State Highway (SH) 392. The $17.5 million project will replace the SH 392 bridge over I-25 with one that is wider to accommodate two lanes in each direction as well as a left-turn lane in each direction. There will also be a six-foot bike lane and a 6.5-foot sidewalk on each side of the bridge. The frontage road on the west side of the interchange will be realigned, and the ramps will be designed to accommodate more traffic. In addition, an expanded 90-space carpool/vanpool lot will be constructed in the southwest corner of the interchange.

Edward Kraemer & Sons, Inc. is the contractor for the project that is scheduled to be complete in the spring of 2013.

Resurfacing Project Overview

Beginning Monday, May 14, 2012, crews will begin a resurfacing project on State Highway (SH) 392 directly east of I-25 from mile marker (MM) 100 to MM 104. The project will extend from just east of the I-25/SH 392 intersection to the intersection of SH 392 and SH 257/7th Street in Windsor. The existing roadway is in poor condition and will be repaired to create a much smoother roadway. Motorists will start to see activity in the area starting May 14 and should plan for minor delays in both directions of the highway and are urged to build extra travel time. Work will take place on the project Mondays through Fridays from roughly 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with occasional night work required. After Memorial Day, there will be some delays on the project and detours will be in place.

Lawson Construction is the contractor for this $4.9 million project that is scheduled for completion by December 2012.

Progress Continues on Interchange

This past week, Royal Vista Drive at SH 392 was also closed for the next month to allow the south half of the highway to be reconstructed. Access to nearby businesses will be provided via Westgate Drive.

Also last week, crews completed installing steel guardrail along the west edge of the southbound I-25 on-ramp, and finished painting the I-25 bridge and retaining walls east of the bridge. Fencing along these locations will be installed in the next few weeks.

During the week of Sunday, May 20, median work will be completed that will allow for colored concrete installation for raised planters between the I-25 bridge and Westgate Drive. By the end of next week, crews will begin landscaping the area. Wall construction on the west end of the project will also be underway. Once it is finished, earthwork and concrete paving can begin. Work continues on signal installation at all intersections, rock veneer installation, and construction of the new Park-n-Ride on the frontage road, which will open late June or early July.

This Sunday night, SH 392 traffic will shift to the southern half of the roadway from the frontage road to the east side of the bridge to allow for paving on the north half of the bridge deck. CDOT thanks motorists for their patience as the day is fast approaching when traffic will be shifted to its final alignment on both sides of the roadway.

Upcoming Lane Closures for Both Projects

  • Sunday, May 20 and Monday, May 21 (if necessary) from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night: Various eastbound and westbound lanes of SH 392 from the frontage road to the Westgate Drive intersection will be closed for restriping and traffic realignment. Traffic will be directed by flaggers throughout the work zone.
  • Monday, May 21 through Friday, May 25 from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day: Varying lanes of eastbound and westbound SH 392 throughout the length of the resurfacing project east of Westgate Drive will be closed for the beginning of roadway surface survey work. Flaggers will be present to direct traffic through the work zone.

PLEASE NOTE: The Park-n-Ride has been temporarily relocated to the cul-de-sac at the north end of Westgate Drive.
