I-70 Viaduct Expansion Joint Repairs

Project Overview

In September 2008, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) began an I-70 Viaduct Repairs expansion joint repair project on the I-70 viaduct from Brighton Boulevard to Colorado Boulevard. The project will repair or replace 60 bridge expansion joints on the 45-year old structure, improve drainage and replace the bridge rail. The project is strictly a maintenance project designed to extend the life of the bridge and it is not connected with the I-70 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The project is estimated to take over two years to complete and the estimated completion date is the spring of 2011. American Civil Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for this project.

Construction Update

Since the project began, crews have replaced 74 bridge drains, constructed shoring towers, which are necessary to begin the expansion joint work, and conducted some minor roadways repairs. In late January, the crews started the expansion joint work.

Lane Closures

The expansion joint work requires single lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-70 starting at 8 p.m. with a second lane closing at 10 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5:30 a.m. the following day. Lane closures can be expected Sunday through Saturday, but currently crews are only working Sunday through Thursday.
