Toll Rates/Violations

How do I pay a toll?
All tolls are collected by electronic toll collection. This means no stopping; no tollbooth congestion; and no change is needed. Simply drive under the electronic toll reader and the toll is deducted automatically from an active EXpressToll account. License Plate Toll was introduced on January 1, 2009 as another option to pay a toll. License Plate Toll customers are billed for their travel in the lane marked "Toll". An EXpress Toll transponder or new sticker tag is not needed but preferred.  For those vehicles without an EXpressToll transponder or new sticker tag, cameras will photograph the front and rear license plates and a bill will be sent one month later to the registered owner of the vehicle, for all the tolls incurred during that period. It’s important to note that License Plate Toll customers will be billed the EXpressToll rate plus a surcharge (generally about 25% extra but may be more).

No advance registration is required. You just enter the toll highway. You will be billed later. Payment must be received by the date specified on the bill or the transactions listed on the statement will eventually become toll violations. In that case, a toll violation citation for each toll will be sent to the vehicle’s registered owner.

Do I need a transponder or new sticker tag to access the lanes?
An EXpress Toll transponder or new sticker tag is not needed but preferred. No tolls are charged to carpools, motorcycles, or buses as long as they are traveling in the lane marked "HOV". Those that drive alone are required to pay a toll each time they enter the HOV/Express Lanes marked "Toll". Carpool vehicles are encouraged to get a transponder or new sticker tag so they have the option of using the Express Lane at some point when only one occupant is in the vehicle.

How much will I pay for a toll?
Prices for the toll lanes change based upon the time of day. The varying toll rate manages traffic such that HOV/Express Lanes never become congested. Electronic message signs and other static signs clearly display the current toll price prior to entrance points.

Below is a toll schedule for the HOV/Express Lanes. Vehicles with four or more axles have to pay the $18 fee in addition to the base toll rate. This toll schedule could change if it is found to be insufficient at providing reliable, uncongested travel times on the facility. Those who do not have an EXpressToll transponder or new sticker tag that use the lane marked “Toll” will be charged a surcharge in addition to the established toll of about 25% or more.

Please note that the HOV/Express Lanes are closed for maintenance activities from 3:00AM-5:00AM and from 10:00AM-Noon each weekday.

How will I know what the toll rate is?
Toll rates vary by time of day and are posted on signs in advance of the entrance to the lanes to enable drivers to make a choice of whether or not to enter the lanes. However, it's important to note that a vehicle is charged a toll when it crosses the toll collection point at 58th Avenue, not when it enters the facility. The toll rate at the time when a vehicle passes through the toll collection point is the amount the vehicle will be charged.

Toll prices vary throughout the day to keep traffic flowing as usual for HOV lane users.
